  • Want to learn more about a zero carbon future for Winchester and what it means for you?
  • Motivated to help shape a local vision for a fair transition to zero carbon?
  • Willing to share ideas about how Winchester District gets there so everyone benefits?

2021 is the UK’s year of climate action. Against the backdrop of The COP26 Summit in Glasgow this November, local community leaders, colleges and campaigners in Winchester are holding a Young People’s Climate Assembly to give voice to young people right across the district – from Micheldever to Denmead, Winchester to Whiteley, Alresford to Hursley – on what can be done to accelerate a fair transition to net zero carbon here in our corner of Hampshire.

  • Our jobs of the future
  • Where our energy comes from
  • Getting around at home and abroad
  • Sustainable homes we can afford
  • The food we eat

The purpose of the Winchester District Young People’s Climate Assembly is to hear from everyone taking part using a process called deliberative democracy. Invited speakers will share their ideas on the actions that can be taken locally. Participants will discuss these proposals, reach consensus on the priorities for our area, and make recommendations on the actions that need to be taken. The findings of the Assembly will be shared with decision makers at Winchester City Council and Hampshire County Council as they develop their responses to the challenge of accelerating climate action following from The COP26 Summit.

The one-day event will be held at the University of Winchester Business School, West Downs on Saturday 20th November 2021 from 10.00 – 16.30hrs. Lunch and travel expenses provided.

We have to change

“Right now our species is undermining and destabilising the very foundations that are necessary for life on Earth to thrive. We know that things are changing, and COP26 is one of our last and most crucial opportunities to make sure it is humanity that has to change, and not the planet.”

Bella Lack – Global North Youth Co-Chair of the COP26 Civil Society and Youth Advisory Council
